Description:

Slightly smaller and more compact than other shanks, red-legged sandpiper, with a heavier straight bill more extensively of red on base. Non-breeding plumage is grey-brown above, with grey breast. Neck and underparts heavily streaked in breeding plumage; upperparts with variable dark brown and cinnamon markings.


Distribution:

Common passage migrant through all the major waterways and lakes of Gilgit-Baltistan. Usually found in wide variety of wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. From lowlands up to 3500m during passage migration.


Behavior:

Uses typical brisk walk while pecking; occasionally probes, jabs or sweeps bill through water; often wades, and occasionally swims. Feeds diurnally and nocturnally. Feeds on insects, spiders and annelids; non-breeders also consume molluscs and crustaceans, particularly amphipod; on occasion, feeds on small fish or tadpoles.
